How to Switch Margin Mode and Adjust Leverage

Gate provides two margin modes: isolated margin and cross margin.

  • Isolated Margin Mode: In isolated margin mode, the margin for a position is independent of the account balance. The Liquidation will be triggered when the position margin balance falls below the maintenance margin. At this point, your maximum loss is limited to the position margin. This mode is suitable for users with a lower risk appetite, as it helps manage the risk of individual positions.
  • Cross Margin Mode: In cross margin mode, all the balance in the account can be used as margin. If the account net assets are insufficient to meet the margin requirement, the liquidation will be triggered, and you may lose the entire balance in the account. This mode is suitable for experienced traders who can flexibly allocate funds and maximize capital efficiency.

Additionally, Gate supports adjusting the leverage in futures trading.

  • Leverage: The higher the leverage, the larger the position size a user can open, but the associated risk also increases. High leverage can amplify gains, but it also magnifies losses. When using higher leverage, the required margin is lower, but the risk significantly increases. For new users who have enabled a futures account for less than 3 days, the platform restricts leverage, with an initial limit of 20x. After 3 days, the leverage limit will gradually be relaxed.

Users can freely adjust the leverage and switch between cross margin or isolated margin mode before opening a position or during an open position. Please note, when switching between cross margin and isolated margin modes, you should first check your positions and pending orders to ensure there are no open contracts or orders. If there are, you will need to close the position or cancel the order first.
